Most of us take for granted that we see one single, clear image of the world. In reality, your brain is doing some incredible heavy lifting. Because your eyes are set slightly apart, each one captures a slightly different perspective.
Your brain receives these two distinct streams of visual information and merges them into one cohesive, 3D image. This process, known as binocular vision, is what allows you to judge distances accurately and coordinate your movements.
However, this delicate balance can be easily disrupted. Whether due to developmental hurdles during childhood or physical injuries later in life, problems with binocular vision can cause your vision and daily comfort to suffer.
If you suspect you have a binocular vision problem, book an appointment with us today.
What Are Symptoms of Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD)?
When your eyes struggle to work as a team, your brain has to work overtime to force them into alignment. This constant strain often leads to a variety of physical symptoms that people don’t always associate with their eyesight.
Common signs of binocular vision problems include:
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Persistent eye strain
- Unexplained motion sickness or dizziness
- General eye pain or a “pulling” sensation
- Blurred vision
- Occasional double vision (diplopia)
- Poor hand-eye coordination or spatiality

What Causes
Binocular Vision Problems?
Binocular vision anomalies can stem from several different physical or neurological factors. Here are some of the most common causes of binocular vision issues:
- Reduced vision in one eye: If one eye sees significantly clearer than the other, the brain may struggle to merge the two different-quality images.
- Strabismus (crossed eyes): This occurs when there is a loss of coordination between the eye muscles, causing the eyes to cross or turn outward.
- Image integration issues: Sometimes the eyes are physically aligned, but the brain has difficulty comparing and combining the images they send.
- Convergence insufficiency: A common condition where the eyes have trouble turning inward to focus on near objects, like a book or a smartphone.
- Amblyopia (lazy eye): This happens when the brain begins to favor one eye, often because the other eye has a much higher prescription or misalignment.
Our Binocular Vision Assessments
A standard vision screening (the kind you might get at a school or a DMV) is designed to see how well you can read letters on a wall. Unfortunately, these screenings often miss how the eyes work together.
To identify BVD, a more detailed assessment is required. Our evaluations include eye coordination tests, eye teaming assessments, and eye tracking assessments. At Luminance Vision, we include binocular vision assessments in all of our comprehensive eye exams.
We don’t just check that you can see; we check that you can see comfortably.
How We Treat Binocular Vision Problems
The good news is that many binocular vision problems are highly treatable. Depending on your specific diagnosis, we may recommend one or a combination of the following:
- Vision Therapy: Think of this as physical therapy for your eyes and brain. We use a series of customized exercises to strengthen eye coordination and improve the brain’s ability to process visual information.
- Prism Lenses: We can prescribe specialized prism glasses that shift the light entering your eyes. This helps compensate for misalignment, allowing your eyes to see a single image without the constant strain.
