What Is IPL Treatment?

Book Appointment

IPL stands for intense pulsed light therapy, an energy-based treatment that provides a powerful, noninvasive solution for eye discomfort.

We offer IPL treatment in Lafayette using Lumenis M22 IPL and InMode Lumecca IPL. Both devices are designed to help reduce symptoms of dry eye disease. IPL is particularly effective in treating dry eye related to meibomian gland dysfunction, as it can clear oil blockages in these glands, improve tear production, and treat styes, chalazia, and reduce general inflammation.

How Does Inflammation Relate to Dry Eyes?

Inflammation and dry eyes are cyclical. When the tissues around the eyes are inflamed, the eyes can’t produce a healthy tear film. Without a healthy tear film, the eyes become dry and irritated.

When the eyes are dry and irritated, the tissues around the eyes become inflamed. The cycle just repeats itself over and over from there.

It’s not uncommon for skin conditions like ocular rosacea and blepharitis to trigger this cycle.

How Does IPL Therapy Work?

We perform IPL by applying a specific wavelength of light to your eyelids, which is then absorbed by certain blood vessels. The light seals these blood vessels, which reduces inflammation.

The light energy may also improve your tear film by warming up the meibomian glands. These glands are responsible for the oil layer of your tear film, which prevents tears from evaporating too quickly. If they aren’t functioning properly, whether due to oil blockages in the glands or inflammation in the eyelids, you may experience dry eye.

IPL targets both inflammation and meibomian gland function, helping to resolve the root cause of your dry eye rather than treating just the symptoms. This results in longer-lasting relief.

Is IPL Therapy Right for Me?

IPL is an effective treatment for many people with dry eye, but the treatment is not for everyone. You may benefit most if you:

  • Have mild to severe dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Have not experienced success from treatments like artificial tears, medications, or warm compresses
  • Have rosacea or redness around the eyes

IPL therapy may not be right for you if:

  • You have certain skin conditions, such as active infections
  • You have a very dark complexion
  • Your dry eye symptoms are caused by aqueous deficiency (insufficient tear production) due to certain medical conditions, like Sjogren’s Syndrome

What Are the Benefits of IPL?

IPL offers a long-term solution for many patients, negating the need for daily medications or eye drops. Some of the key benefits of IPL include:

  • Targeting the root cause of dry eye: IPL targets chronic inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction, both of which can cause dry eye symptoms.
  • Reduces inflammation effectively: IPL has anti-inflammatory effects that reduce redness, swelling, and eye irritation to halt chronic inflammation in its tracks.
  • Long-lasting results: IPL can provide long-lasting improvements to dry eye symptoms after a series of sessions, with routine maintenance.
  • Aesthetic side effects: As IPL targets inflammation and redness, it can also provide happy side effects, including reducing the appearance of fine lines, evening your skin tone, and rejuvenating the skin around your eyes.

What To Expect
During an IPL Treatment

Before starting IPL therapy, we’ll meet for a consultation to make sure this is the right course of treatment for you. If we think you’ll benefit from IPL, we will schedule your treatment.

Each treatment session will take approximately 20 minutes. You will feel heat applied to your skin. Most patients report little to no discomfort.

We usually recommend 4 sessions to achieve lasting results and restore comfort. Depending on the severity of your dry eye, we may schedule additional sessions. Once you’ve completed your treatments, we’ll continue monitoring your tear health periodically and schedule occasional maintenance sessions every 6–12 months to preserve your comfort.

To prepare your skin for IPL treatment, you should do the following before your treatment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning 2 weeks before your scheduled treatment
  • Don’t get a wax, chemical peel, or fillers for 2 weeks before your scheduled treatment
  • Discontinue tretinoin, retinA, retinol, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, benzoic acid, adapalene, or any other acids except hyaluronic acid
  • Don’t wear makeup or sunscreen on the day of your treatment (come bare-faced)
  • Let us know about any medications or supplements you are currently taking

To begin, we’ll rub a clear gel on the target area.

The handheld device will be placed directly on your skin. When the light is administered, you may feel a mild stinging sensation followed by a quick cooling for comfort.

Patients describe the feeling as similar to the snapping of a rubber band.

An IPL service usually takes around 20–30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Immediately after treatment, you may feel like you have a mild sunburn. This sensation usually diminishes within 4–6 hours. Redness is also normal and can last a few days.

While your skin heals, it’s important to avoid sun exposure, wear SPF daily, and use gentle products for cleansing and moisturizing. Our team will go over specific aftercare instructions with you following your session.
