Help Your Child Reach Their Full Potential

Proper vision is essential to your child’s learning and development. Children with uncorrected vision problems can struggle academically, socially, and athletically

Regular eye exams assess for more than your child’s visual acuity (ability to see clearly at a distance). During an eye exam, the optometrist also checks your child’s eye coordination, tracking, focusing, and perception skills, which work together for functional vision.

At Luminance Vision, we take time to fully understand your child’s vision in order to identify any areas that need a little extra support. We also carry eyewear designed specifically for children, to give them comfortable, stylish options they will love. Book their eye exam in Lafayette today.

How Often Does Your Child Need an Eye Exam?

Many factors can influence how often a child should have an eye exam. For most children, the American Optometric Association recommends the following eye exam schedule:

  • Once between the ages of 6 and 12 months
  • Once between the ages of 3 and 5 years
  • Once every year after starting school

Following your child’s eye exam, your optometrist can recommend a specific schedule based on their needs. A family history of vision problems or eye diseases might mean more frequent eye exams are recommended for your child.

How Vision
Impacts Learning

Up to 80% of classroom learning is visual, which means that an uncorrected vision problem can have significant consequences on your child’s success in school.

Having good, functional vision is about more than clear eyesight. It also relies on the coordination of eye muscles and a strong connection between the eyes and the brain. When any problem exists within their visual system, your child can experience discomfort, fatigue, double vision, or pain, such as headaches.

During their eye exam, we’ll assess for important visual skills that your child needs to support their learning and development. From being able to change focus quickly from the board to their notebook, to being able to track their eyes along the page and understand and recall what they’ve read, visual skills play an important role.

Our team is here to support your child’s visual development from infancy through adulthood.

Common Vision Problems
in Children

Children experience both refractive errors, like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, as well as developmental issues including muscle coordination issues.

A comprehensive eye exam at Luminance Vision includes a full analysis of your child’s visual health and function. We go beyond your child’s visual acuity to check how well their eyes work together and if the connection between their eyes and their brain is functioning well.

We check for signs of progressive myopia, which occurs during childhood and results in eye elongation (abnormal eye growth) that causes worsening eyesight and carries risks of serious conditions in adulthood. For children with myopia, we can recommend a tailored myopia control program aimed at slowing this growth and preserving vision and health.

We also check for eye teaming issues, such as binocular vision problems, strabismus (crossed eyes), and amblyopia (lazy eye). These vision problems require interventions such as glasses, eye patching, and vision therapy to correct, so your child’s vision is fully functional and comfortable.

Signs of Vision Problems
to Watch For

Children often struggle to express their vision problems. They may believe that everyone sees the way they do. Additionally, some signs of vision problems are not always obvious and can be confused with learning or behavior difficulties, such as ADHD or dyslexia, as they can have similar symptoms.

A comprehensive eye exam can help to diagnose or rule out a vision problem, particularly if your child is experiencing difficulties in school or with sports. Treating a vision problem can also make treatment for ADHD, dyslexia, or other conditions more effective.

Some signs to watch out for in your child include:

  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • Closing or covering one eye to see
  • Holding reading materials or screens close to their face
  • Short attention span, particularly for near tasks like homework, reading, or Legos
  • Complaints of headaches, sore eyes, or fatigue

If you notice any of these symptoms, we recommend bringing your child in for an exam. Be sure to let your optometrist know about any signs you’ve observed in your child.

The Right Eyewear
for Your Child

We can get your kids excited about choosing the perfect pair of glasses. We help your child choose frames they love while finding the proper fit.

A proper fit is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing glasses for children, especially the bridge fit. We carry frames with low, wide bridges to fit children’s faces better, allowing your little one to see clearly and comfortably.

Your child’s glasses should be an extension of their personality, on top of providing them with crystal clear vision – that’s why we carry the following brands:

Set Your Child Up for Success
with Clear Vision

A comprehensive eye exam is an essential part of your child’s overall healthcare. Because children often struggle to articulate vision problems, eye conditions can go unnoticed without a professional evaluation.

Our experienced optometrists offer complete eye exams to diagnose and manage vision difficulties or health issues. We are committed to guiding you and your child through the process, helping keep their vision clear and comfortable at every stage of development. If glasses or contact lenses are needed, we will help find the perfect fit.

Give your child the care they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Book their eye exam and visit us in Lafayette today.
