Comprehensive eye exams are an essential part of protecting and preserving your long-term eye health. We recommend scheduling eye exams routinely to stay ahead of vision and health problems.

At Luminance Vision, our comprehensive eye exams go beyond checking your visual acuity (how well you see at a distance) and your physical eye health. We also assess your vision function to see how well your eyes work together, and discuss concerns such as dry eyes, headaches, eye strain, and vision changes that may be affecting your daily life.

Our goal is to keep your vision clear, comfortable, and healthy for the future. Book your eye exam with us in Lafayette today.

How Often Do You Need an Eye Exam?

According to the American Optometric Association, adults need an eye exam every 2 years from ages 18 to 64. From age 65 onwards, you should have an eye exam every year. We recommend you visit us for annual eye exams for preventive eye care.

You may need to visit the optometrist more frequently if you have certain health concerns, including a personal or family history of eye disease; certain health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure; a high or changing lens prescription; visual impairment; a previous eye injury or surgery; or wear contact lenses.

What to Expect
During Your Eye Exam

We begin the eye exam by first discussing your medical history and any concerns you might have. This includes things like dry eyes, digital eye strain, headaches, and vision changes. We want you to fully understand your vision and eye health by the end of your appointment.

Next, we assess your physical eye health using our diagnostic technology. This includes measuring your intraocular pressure (internal eye pressure), looking inside your eye with a special microscope, and possibly retinal imaging or optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans.

Next, we’ll do a visual acuity test to measure how well you see at various distances and update your prescription as needed. If you wear contact lenses, we’ll complete some additional measurements to get your contact lens prescription.

Finally, we end every eye exam with a personalized styling appointment. Whether you need a new prescription or you’re just looking to switch up your look, we can help you find the perfect pair of glasses and sunglasses.

Common Vision Problems
We Monitor

Most people experience some type of vision problem in their lifetime, whether it is a refractive error like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, or a more serious condition such as an eye disease.

At Luminance Vision, we work closely with you to examine your eye health and discuss your experiences to determine whether you are dealing with any vision concerns that go beyond prescription lenses.

Whether you are struggling with dry eyes, fatigue after screen use, or headaches and motion sickness, we’ll perform a thorough, in-depth assessment to determine if a vision or eye problem is at play. Read more about some of the common vision problems we assess for.

Dry eye is a common, chronic condition that affects the health of your tear film. As a result, your eyes often feel gritty, scratchy, dry, and irritated. During your eye exam, we’ll check on your tear film and ask about dry eye symptoms.

Our dry eye clinic offers a thorough dry eye assessment if you’re experiencing symptoms. This includes determining the cause and severity of your conditions, as well as a tailored treatment plan to help you find lasting relief.

Digital eye strain is a combination of symptoms, including headaches, blurred vision, tired, dry, or burning eyes, and neck and shoulder pain, that occurs with prolonged screen use. Individuals with digital eye strain may struggle to maintain comfort and focus if working on a computer or digital screen for long periods, particularly for work or school.

We can offer solutions for digital eye strain, including tailored advice for at-home or work adjustments and customized eyewear to reduce the strain on your eyes.

Binocular vision refers to the coordination of vision between both your eyes and your brain. With well-functioning binocular vision, your brain is able to merge the images from each eye seamlessly, leading to strong depth perception, eye tracking, and eye focusing skills.

In some cases, however, binocular vision anomalies can occur. There are many causes of binocular vision dysfunction (BVD), and individuals with BVD may experience symptoms such as headaches, eye strain, eye pain, blurred vision, and occasional double vision. They may also struggle to catch items, judge how quickly a car is approaching while crossing the road, or pour liquids into a cup.

We provide thorough binocular vision assessments to determine if BVD is a concern. Specialized eyewear and eye exercises can improve vision and eye coordination.

Many eye diseases begin without noticeable symptoms during their early, and most treatable, stages. At Luminance Vision, we use our diagnostic technology to keep a close watch on your eye health so we can detect problems as soon as they emerge.

Our focus is on your long-term visual health. This is achieved through our commitment to preventive care and early detection, using technology, professional assessments by our optometrists, and open, honest conversations with our patients.
