Book Appointment

Glasses can be a fashion statement for some and an annoyance for others. The same goes for contact lenses. If you’re dreaming about what life could look like without lenses, a laser eye surgery consultation is an opportunity to explore alternative vision correction options.

At Luminance Vision, we provide comprehensive consultations that include a thorough evaluation of your eye health and vision, and an in-depth discussion about your expectations for the procedure.

If you’re interested in discussing laser vision correction surgery, book a consultation with us today.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

It’s important to make sure your goals and laser surgery are a good match. During your laser surgery consultation, we’ll discuss your expectations and lifestyle to see if laser eye surgery is right for you.

We’ll also do a comprehensive eye exam to rule out factors that might prevent you from being able to get laser eye surgery. To be a good candidate for laser eye surgery, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years or older
  • Have a stable prescription
  • Be in good health, including no frequent eye infections

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

There are several types of laser eye surgery available, with the most common being LASIK and PRK. These procedures are similar, with small differences that may affect which surgery is better suited to different individuals.

Certain eye conditions may also influence which type of laser eye surgery we recommend for you. For example, patients with thin corneas may be better candidates for PRK laser eye surgery rather than LASIK.

Many people use LASIK as a blanket term to describe all types of laser eye surgery. LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

During the surgery, your surgeon will create a small flap in your cornea, which is folded back. Then, a computer-controlled laser will reshape the underlying layers of your cornea. Once complete, the flap is folded back into place for healing.

PRK, which stands for photorefractive keratectomy, is typically recommended for patients who aren’t good candidates for LASIK, like those with thin corneas or severely dry eyes. PRK may also be a better fit for you if you’re extremely active, as there is no risk of flap-related complications with PRK.

During a PRK procedure, the surgeon removes the epithelium (the outer layer of your cornea) rather than creating a flap. Then, a computer-programmed laser is used to reshape your cornea, similar to LASIK. A corneal bandage is placed over the eye to support healing.

Is Laser Eye Surgery Right for Me?

To determine whether laser eye surgery is a good fit based on your goals, we’ll complete a thorough evaluation and discussion. We’ll let you know what you can expect from surgery, including what to expect from the healing process and any side effects that may occur.

Certain side effects are possible during the healing process, although many are temporary. These side effects can include:

  • Pain
  • Blurry vision
  • Glare
  • Halos
  • Light sensitivity
  • Dry eyes

After your consultation, if you decide to proceed with the surgery, we can provide you with a referral to a local ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) to complete your procedure. We will be here to support your healing process after the procedure, as well.
