Why Is a Contact Lens Exam Necessary?
Contact lenses are medical devices. They rest directly on your eye, so a proper fit is imperative to keep your eyes healthy and comfortable. Precise measurements taken during your contact lens exam help to achieve this proper fit, along with the trial process.
For individuals who have worn contact lenses for years, a routine contact lens exam can help to make sure that the lenses are working properly and not negatively affecting the eyes. Additionally, changing prescriptions or lifestyles could mean a different lens style may suit you better than your previous lenses.

How We Find
Your Perfect Contact Lenses
During a contact lens exam, your optometrist assesses your general eye health to make sure your eyes are suited for contact lens wear and takes precise measurements of your eyes to find the right fit. They also measure your contact lens prescription, which is different from your glasses prescription.
Depending on lifestyle factors, such as whether you work on a computer, spend long hours outdoors, or prefer the convenience of disposable lenses versus the longevity of multi-use lenses, can indicate which lenses might be a better fit. We also consider your prescription and other conditions, such as dry eye, when making a lens recommendation.
Your contact lens process includes 3 parts: the exam, the fitting, and the trial.
A comprehensive eye exam is the first step to finding the right contact lenses for you. We fully evaluate your eye health and vision. This allows us to update your prescription, if necessary, and check for concerns like dry eye that might influence which contact lenses we recommend.
After the initial exam, we move on to the contact lens fitting. During the fitting, we take a detailed account of the shape of your eyes and identify key measurements. This helps us find the ideal contacts to fit your eye shape, especially if you have astigmatism or an irregular cornea.
We will use an autorefractometer and keratometer to measure your refractive error (how nearsighted or farsighted you are), as well as the size of your pupil, iris, and the shape of your cornea (the clear front part of your eye) for an accurate fit.
After your exam and fitting, we’ll give you a trial pair of lenses to wear. If you’re a new contact lens wearer, we will teach you how to insert and remove them.
If you find the contacts clear and comfortable after the trial period, we’ll order a supply of lenses for you. If the trial pair isn’t quite right, we will address your concerns until we find the proper contact lenses for your needs.
Specialty Contact Lenses
We Carry
Beyond standard soft contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable lenses, we also offer specialty contact lenses for distinct visual or cosmetic needs. Whether you’re interested in exploring specific contact lenses for a unique prescription or colored contact lenses for special occasions or for fun, we can provide you with a proper, comfortable fit.
Toric Contact Lenses
Toric contact lenses are specialty contact lenses designed to provide increased stability and clarity, particularly for patients with astigmatism or irregularly-shaped eyes. Toric contact lenses vary in weight or thickness around the edges. This helps keep the lens oriented the right way in your eye and prevents the lens from rotating when you blink.
Bifocal Contact Lenses
Bifocal contact lenses work similarly to bifocal glasses. They contain two prescriptions, one for distance vision and one for near vision. This is achieved with concentric rings of different prescriptions. The dual prescriptions are often a good fit for patients with presbyopia, a common side effect of aging that causes difficulty focusing on close objects.
Colored & Cosmetic Lenses
Whether for special occasions or everyday wear, it’s highly recommended to only get colored or cosmetic contact lenses from your optometrist. Improperly fitted cosmetic lenses can cause corneal scratches, ulcers, and infections, as well as dry eyes, as colored lenses tend to be less breathable.
We can provide a careful examination of your eyes and a proper fitting before supplying you with the appropriate colored lenses that also contain your prescription and your unique measurements.
Keeping Your Vision Clear
and Comfortable with Contacts
Contact lenses can provide a great alternative to glasses, leaving your face bare and avoiding fogged or smudged lenses. However, a proper fit and strong communication between you and your optometrist are important for a comfortable, clear pair of contacts.
We encourage you to let us know if you have any concerns or questions during the exam and fitting process. Once you trial the lenses, bring us your honest feedback. If the lenses aren’t quite right, let us know so we can improve them.
